Hemodynamic factors have long been associated with clinical outcomes in the treatment of cerebral aneurysms. Computational studies of cerebral aneurysm hemodynamics have provided valuable estimates of the mechanical environment experienced by the endothelium in both the parent vessel and aneurysmal dome walls and have correlated them with disease state. These computational-clinical studies have recently been correlated with the response of endothelial cells (EC) using either idealized or...

CONCLUSION: We report a rare case of primary pontine malignant melanoma in which microsurgical resection resulted in dramatic clinical improvement despite the challenging location. This is only the second reported case of brainstem PIMM. More patients with longer-term follow-up will be necessary to determine the best treatment approach.

CONCLUSIONS: Research examining medical school interventions and institutional practices to support primary care specialty choice would benefit from stronger theoretical grounding, greater investment in planning and piloting, consistent use of language, more qualitative methods, and innovative approaches. Robust funding mechanisms are needed to advance these goals.

CONCLUSIONS: Required family medicine and primary care clerkships were correlated with primary care specialty choice. More high-quality research is needed to better understand how to maximize the impact of clerkships on primary care specialty choice.

CONCLUSION: COVID-19 was an independent predictor of incomplete revascularization and poor functional outcome in patients with stroke due to LVO. Furthermore, COVID-19 patients with LVO were more often younger and had higher morbidity/mortality rates.

Proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) is one main complication in the surgical treatment of adult spinal deformities. Ending within the thoracolumbar junction (TLJ) should but cannot always be avoided to reduce the risk for PJK. With this systematic review we sought to define the most preferable vertebra within the TLJ to minimize the risk for PJK and establish recommendations based on our findings. We conducted a systematic literature review by scanning the MEDLINE database in accordance with the...

Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is now viewed as integral to the clinical care of many life-threatening brain insults, such as severe traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and malignant stroke. It serves to warn of expanding intracranial mass lesions, to prevent or treat herniation events as well as pressure elevation which impedes nutrient delivery to the brain. It facilitates the calculation of cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and the estimation of cerebrovascular...

Various cell types can be derived from stem cells. However, these cells are immature and do not match their adult counterparts in functional capabilities, limiting their use in disease modeling and cell therapies. Thus, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms of maturation in vivo. However, it is unknown if there are genes and pathways conserved across organs during maturation. To address this, we performed a time-series analysis of the transcriptome of the mouse heart, brain, liver, and...

A sigh is a distinct respiratory behavior with specific psychophysiological roles. In two accompanying reviews we will discuss the physiological and psychological functions of the sigh. The present review will focus on the psychological functions of the sigh. We discuss the regulatory effects of a sigh, and argue how these effects may become maladaptive when sighs occur excessively. The adaptive role of a sigh is discussed in the context of regulation of psychophysiological states. We propose...

Heterochromatin is a physical state of the chromatin fiber that maintains gene repression during cell development. Although evidence exists on molecular mechanisms involved in heterochromatin formation, a detailed structural mechanism of heterochromatin formation needs a better understanding. We made use of a simple Monte Carlo simulation model with explicit representation of key molecular events to observe molecular self-organization leading to heterochromatin formation. Our simulations provide...

The COVID-19 pandemic motivated research on antiviral filtration used in personal protective equipment and HVAC systems. In this research, three coating compositions of NaCl, Tween 20 surfactant, and NaCl-Tween 20 were examined on polypropylene spun-bond filters. The pressure drop, coverage, and crystal size of the coating methods and compositions were measured. Also, in vitro plaque assays of the Phi6 Bacteriophage on Pseudomonas syringae as a simulation of an enveloped respiratory virus was...

CONCLUSIONS: Use of reSET-O is associated with significant and durable real-world reductions in ED and inpatient (including readmissions) utilization, reduced net costs, and increased clinician services and buprenorphine adherence. Differences in costs versus controls were greatest among Medicaid patients. INFOGRAPHIC.

Rapalogues are powerful therapeutic modalities for breast cancer; however, they suffer from low solubility and dose-limiting side effects. To overcome these challenges, we developed a long-circulating multiheaded drug carrier called 5FA, which contains rapamycin-binding domains linked with elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs). To target these "Hydra-ELPs" toward breast cancer, we here linked 5FA with four distinct peptides which are reported to engage the cell surface form of the 78 kDa...

CONCLUSIONS: Veterans are least willing to seek treatment for the health conditions that are most prevalent in their communities. Coping strategies may mitigate the negative association between discriminatory experiences and willingness to seek treatment among Veterans of color. Fronto-orbital advancement remains a powerful technique for the correction of anterior cranial vault differences related to metopic (trigonocephaly) or unilateral coronal (anterior plagiocephaly) craniosynostoses. Traditional fronto-orbital advancement requires access to the forehead and superior 2/3 of the orbit via a coronal incision. The frontal bone and orbital segment (bandeau) are then separated from the skull and reshaped. In patients with metopic craniosynostosis, the bandeau and frontal...

Central nervous system (CNS) relapse of Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) is a rare phenomenon with dismal prognosis, where no standard therapy exists. Since the covalent Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitor ibrutinib is effective in relapsed/refractory MCL and it penetrates the blood-brain barrier (BBB), on behalf of Fondazione Italiana Linfomi and European Mantle Cell Lymphoma Network we performed a multicenter retrospective international study to investigate the outcomes of patients treated with...

The last known red wolves were captured in southwestern Louisiana and eastern Texas in 1980 to establish a captive breeding population. Before their extirpation, gene flow with coyotes resulted in the persistence of endangered red wolf genetic variation in local coyote populations. We assessed genomic ancestry and morphology of coyotes in southwestern Louisiana. We detected that 38 to 62% of the coyote genomes contained red wolf ancestry acquired in the past 30 years and have an admixture...
