CONCLUSIONS: In this multicenter analysis of late patients treated with endovascular treatment, sex was not associated with functional outcome. However, sex influenced the association between age and safety outcomes, with men experiencing worse outcomes with advancing age.

In individual SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks, the count of confirmed cases and deaths follow a Gompertz growth function for locations of very different sizes. This lack of dependence on region size leads us to hypothesize that virus spread depends on universal properties of the network of social interactions. We test this hypothesis by simulating the propagation of a virus on networks of different topologies. Our main finding is that Gompertz growth observed for early outbreaks occurs only for a...

A wide variety of benign and malignant tumors can arise from different structures in the orbital and peri-orbital area, affecting the eye and the optic nerve. This spectrum of tumors includes primary and metastatic carcinomas, lymphomas, melanomas, soft tissue tumors, and primary tumors of the retina, optic disc, and optic nerve. These also extend to relatively rare entities such as solitary fibrous tumor and meningioma of the orbit and optic nerve, which can present with very similar clinical...

CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cohort study, the incidence of self-reported PTE after TBI was found to be 2.8% and was independently associated with unfavorable outcomes. These findings highlight the need for effective antiepileptogenic therapies after TBI.

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a rare complication after solid organ transplant. We present a case of GVHD after simultaneous pancreas kidney transplant. The patient was diagnosed with a cutaneous biopsy after developing the classic symptoms of maculopapular rash, diarrhea, and pancytopenia. However, this patient had unexplained elevations in donor-derived cell-free DNA (dd-cfDNA) for months before the onset of GVHD symptoms. We hypothesize that GVHD may be associated with elevated dd-cfDNA...

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is an important tool in the treatment of pharmacologically resistant neurological movement disorders such as essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the open-loop design of current systems may be holding back the true potential of invasive neuromodulation. In the last decade we have seen an explosion of activity in the use of feedback to "close the loop" on neuromodulation in the form of adaptive DBS (aDBS) systems that can respond to the...

Medical devices with antimicrobial properties are a potential long-term solution to the high rate of multi-drug-resistant healthcare-associated infections. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are an established agent for effectively eliminating a wide range of microbial strains. AgNPs have been commonly incorporated into traditional plastic materials; however, recently, there has been increased interest in using AgNPs combined with 3D-printing technology for medical devices due to the accessibility and...

A recent phase 3 trial of intravesical nadofaragene firadenovec reported a promising complete response rate for patients with bacillus Calmette-Guérin-unresponsive non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. This study examined the ability of antiadenovirus antibody levels to predict the durability of therapeutic response to nadofaragene firadenovec. A standardized and validated quantitative assay was used to prospectively assess baseline and post-treatment serum antibody levels among 91 patients from...

Genetic mitochondrial diseases are the most frequent cause of inherited metabolic disorders and one of the most prevalent causes of heritable neurological disease. Leigh syndrome is the most common clinical presentation of pediatric mitochondrial disease, typically appearing in the first few years of life, and involving severe multisystem pathologies. Clinical care for Leigh syndrome patients is difficult, complicated by the wide range of symptoms including characteristic progressive CNS lesion,...

CONCLUSIONS: Black, Hispanic, and Other colorectal cancer patients experience treatment delays when compared to White patients. Equalization of the mediators used in this study could reduce treatment delays by 20-43% depending on racial/ethnic group. Future research should identify other causes of racial disparities in treatment delay and intervene upon them. See Video Abstract at http://links.lww.com/DCR/B871.

CONCLUSIONS: Logic's song "1-800-273-8255" was associated with a large increase in calls to Lifeline. A reduction in suicides was observed in the periods with the most social media discourse about the song.

Patients harboring mutations in the PI3K-AKT-MTOR pathway-encoding genes often develop a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders including epilepsy. A significant proportion remains unresponsive to conventional anti-seizure medications. Understanding mutation-specific pathophysiology is thus critical for molecularly targeted therapies. We previously determined that mouse models expressing a patient-related activating mutation in PIK3CA, encoding the p110α catalytic subunit of...

Adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) promises a significant improvement in patient outcomes, compared to existing deep brain stimulation devices. Fully implanted systems represent the next step to the clinical adoption of aDBS. We take advantage of a unique longitudinal data set formed as part of an effort to investigate aDBS for essential tremor to verify the long term reliability of electrocorticography strips over the motor cortex as a source of bio-markers for control of adaptive...

Engineered immune cells are an exciting therapeutic modality, which survey and attack tumors. Backpacking strategies exploit cell targeting capabilities for delivery of drugs to combat tumors and their immune-suppressive environments. Here, a new platform for arming cell therapeutics through dual receptor and polymeric prodrug engineering is developed. Macrophage and T cell therapeutics are engineered to express a bioorthogonal single chain variable fragment receptor. The receptor binds a...

The ribosome stalling mechanism is a crucial biological process, yet its atomistic underpinning is still elusive. In this framework, the human XBP1u translational arrest peptide (AP) plays a central role in regulating the unfolded protein response (UPR) in eukaryotic cells. Here, we report multimicrosecond all-atom molecular dynamics simulations designed to probe the interactions between the XBP1u AP and the mammalian ribosome exit tunnel, both for the wild type AP and for four mutant variants...

CONCLUSIONS: Findings delineate service delivery models available to veterans with TBI-related vision impairment. The challenge these data address is the lack of clear paths from diagnosis of TBI to identification of vision dysfunction deficits to specialized vision rehabilitation, and finally to community reintegration and community based-vision rehabilitation.

CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the need for vision rehabilitation may extend as long as 2 years after TBI. Access to vision rehabilitation is complicated by the paucity of available neuro-optometric services.
