Congratulations to Dr. Hofstetter who along with Dr. Chet Moritz was awarded a Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs grant in the amount of $410,176 (1st year) for their project “Closed-loop Spinal Stimulation for Restoration of Upper Extremity Function After Spinal Cord Injury.” The major goal of this proposal is to test activity-dependent spinal stimulation of the spinal cord to improve motor recovery after cervical spinal cord injury in humans and animals. The aims of the project are two-fold: to improve volitional control of hand muscle control using closed-loop, activity dependent spinal stimulation in people with chronic cervical SCI and to determine the mechanisms of spasticity reduction via spinal stimulation and develop parameters to promote prolonged improvements in tone after spinal cord injury.
