International multi-center study of middle meningeal artery embolization for chronic subdural hematoma in cancer patients: Efficacy, safety, and outcomes in a high-risk population

1 day 19 hours ago
BackgroundMiddle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) is a promising treatment for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH). Cancer patients are at risk for cSDH due to thrombocytopenia. The efficacy of MMAE in this population has not been studied.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective analysis of 76 patients who underwent 94 MMAEs for cSDH at 12 tertiary centers across North America and Europe between February 2018 and January 2023. We analyzed patient demographics, clinical profiles, procedural details,...

KAT5 regulates neurodevelopmental states associated with G0-like populations in glioblastoma

5 days 19 hours ago
Quiescence cancer stem-like cells may play key roles in promoting tumor cell heterogeneity and recurrence for many tumors, including glioblastoma (GBM). Here we show that the protein acetyltransferase KAT5 is a key regulator of transcriptional, epigenetic, and proliferative heterogeneity impacting transitions into G0-like states in GBM. KAT5 activity suppresses the emergence of quiescent subpopulations with neurodevelopmental progenitor characteristics, while promoting GBM stem-like cell (GSC)...

Both hot- and thermoneutral-water immersion reduce 24-h blood pressure in people with hypertension: A randomized crossover study

The objective of this study was to characterize the 24-h blood pressure response following an acute hot-water immersion exposure, specifically examining the effect of immersion duration and water temperature, in people with hypertension. Sixteen participants (11 females; 62 ± 7 y; 31.7 ± 7.5 kg.m^(-2)) with hypertension (taking at least one anti-hypertensive medication) completed four randomized sessions: 1) 20-min and 2) 40-min hot-water immersion (40°C), 3) 40-min thermoneutral immersion...

Brain and cerebrospinal fluid 3D center of mass shift after spaceflight

A subset of long-duration spaceflight astronauts at the International Space Station has been documented to develop spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). Researchers have sought to understand SANS by quantification of ocular and brain structural changes thought to be associated with weightlessness induced headward fluid shift. Brain tissue shift and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) redistribution has been observed as measured by MRI on return to Earth, and not fully quantified. To improve...

Neighborhood Disadvantage, Syndemic Conditions, and PrEP Non-Adherence in Young Sexual and Gender Minority Men

1 week 1 day ago
Adherence to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) among young sexual and gender minority men who have sex with men (YSGMMSM) has been suboptimal for reducing HIV incidence in the United States. Using the syndemic framework, the present study characterized how neighborhood disadvantage and clustering of two or more syndemic conditions (depression, anxiety, polysubstance use, history of arrest, BIPOC racial identity, unemployment) was related to PrEP non-adherence among 212 YSGMMSM aged 16-24. This...

A Spatial Multi-Omic Framework Identifies Gliomas Permissive to TIL Expansion

1 week 5 days ago
Tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy, recently approved by the FDA for melanoma, is an emerging modality for cell-based immunotherapy. However, its application in immunologically "cold" tumors such as glioblastoma remains limited due to sparse T cell infiltration, antigenic heterogeneity, and a suppressive tumor microenvironment. To identify genomic and spatial determinants of TIL expandability, we performed integrated, multimodal profiling of high-grade gliomas using spectral flow...

The effect of pre-operative cardiorespiratory fitness on functional and subjective outcomes following total hip and knee arthroplasty: a single centre, observational study

1 week 6 days ago
CONCLUSION: Pre-operative peak VO2 was associated with physical and subjective recovery following total hip or knee arthroplasty. Daily step count and estimated peak VO2 via the DASI questionnaire had similar moderate associations with post-operative functional outcomes as directly measured pre-operative peak VO2 and may be acceptable alternatives to predict recovery following hip or knee arthroplasty.

Design and methodology for monitoring the occurrence of foodborne pathogens in meat and poultry in United States: Case study of Campylobacter on chicken

In the United States, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, oversees multiple sampling programs that focus on detecting microbial contamination of meat and poultry in slaughter and processing establishments. There have been efforts across scientific disciplines to describe data collection methods and estimation strategies for large scale surveys to allow for the integration of data from multiple sources. The FSIS sample selection...

Volume Optimization Incorporating Negative Pressure Diuresis in Heart Failure (VOID-HF)

2 weeks 1 day ago
Acute decompensated heart failure is a common problem and is frequently associated with diuretic resistance from cardiorenal syndrome. We present the first in human use of the JuxtaFlow Renal Assist Device (RAD) to treat congestion in patients admitted to the hospital with acute decompensated heart failure. In an open-label single-arm trial, patients admitted with acute decompensated heart failure who were diuretic resistant underwent placement of the RAD catheter system and received treatment...

Order and Timing of Middle Meningeal Artery Embolization as a Perioperative Adjunct to Surgical Evacuation for Chronic Subdural Hematomas: A Multicenter Study

2 weeks 1 day ago
Background Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) is a common neurosurgical condition, and middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) has emerged as a minimally invasive adjunct to surgery, but optimal timing remains unclear. Purpose To investigate radiographic and clinical outcomes of patients with cSDH undergoing MMAE as an adjunct to surgical evacuation, focusing on order and timing of MMAE relative to surgery. Materials and Methods This multicenter, retrospective study included consecutive...

C-terminal fusion partner activity contributes to the oncogenic functions of YAP1::TFE3

2 weeks 2 days ago
YAP1 gene fusions are found in a multitude of human tumors, are potent oncogenic drivers, and are the likely initiating tumorigenic events in these tumors. We and others have previously shown that a YAP1 fusion proteins exert TEAD-dependent oncogenic YAP1 activity that is resistant to inhibitory Hippo pathway signaling. However, the contributions of the C-terminal fusion partners to the oncogenic functions of YAP1 fusion proteins are understudied. Here, we used the RCAS/tv-a system to express...

Outcomes of arteriovenous malformations with single versus multiple draining veins: A multicenter study

3 weeks 1 day ago
CONCLUSION: Single draining vein AVMs were more likely to present with rupture, but no significant differences in obliteration rates, functional outcomes, or retreatment rates were found between the groups after adjustment. These findings suggest that while venous drainage patterns may influence initial presentation, they do not appear to affect overall treatment success or patient prognosis after any treatment type. Further studies are needed to confirm.

A thematic analysis of what Australians state would change their minds on climate change

3 weeks 1 day ago
What do Australians believe would change their current opinions about climate change? In this study, we used audience segmentation analysis through the Six Americas Short Survey to identify groups of climate opinion holders within a representative sample of Australians. We had 4857 participants tell us what it would take to change their current opinions about climate change and leveraged OpenAI's Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) to identify the presence or absence of themes (Nothing,...
