
Our very own Dr. Christine Mac Donald, Professor & Vice Chair of Research in Neurological Surgery was part of a team of international experts invited to redefine how we classify traumatic brain injury. Their recommendations of a newly proposed clinical framework were just published in Lancet Neurology. “It’s a little odd when you think about it” says Mac Donald “Here we have this very complex condition, traumatic brain injury, that is comprised of many different kinds of injuries, to the most complex organ in the body, the brain, and we are still diagnosing it with crude terms, calling it mild, moderate, and severe injury. No other complex medical condition is characterized like that such as cancer, we don’t say you are diagnosed with ‘mild Cancer’ for example; so it was really time we come up with something different and leverage the rich medical information available to us on each patient.” The team developed the CBI-M clinical classification model which utilizes Clinical, Biofluid Biomarker, Imaging, and Modifiers to classify traumatic brain injury and is set to revolutionize brain injury diagnosis.
