Dr. Ellenbogen received the prestigious Founder’s Laurel Award on October 14th at the 75th Annual Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) meeting which took place in Los Angeles. The award is presented to recognize exceptional, meritorious, and lifelong contributions to the field of neurosurgery. Dr. Ellenbogen received the CNS Distinguished Service Award in 2017.
In his introductory comments, Dr. Russell Lonser highlighted some of Dr. Ellenbogen’s numerous achievements, including being awarded the Bronze Star for his service during Operation Desert Storm. Dr. Lonser went on to note that as the consummate mentor, Dr. Ellenbogen has trained over 70 residents and 98 fellows and received the ACGME’s Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award in 2023. Dr. Lonser further noted that as an academician and innovator, Dr. Ellenbogen has had continuous federal funding for his research, holds 7 patents and has authored 345 peer-reviewed publications and 37 book chapters. In closing, Dr. Lonser recognized Dr. Ellenbogen’s incredible service to the field having served as President of the CNS, Chair of the ABNS, President of ASPN and now Chair of the ACGME’s Neurological Surgery Residency Review Committee resulting in improved patient care. He further recognized Dr. Ellenbogen’s service to public safety as the author of the Lystedt concussion law passed in 50 states.
