Dr. Christine Mac Donald and team publish JAMA - Neurology article on 5-Year Outcome after Concussive Blast Brain Injury

Dr. Christine Mac Donald, Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery, is first author on an important paper published in the May 1, 2017 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association - Neurology entitled Early Clinical Predictors of 5-Year Outcome After Concussive Blast Traumatic Brain Injury
Dr. Mac Donald’s research was supported by the Department of Defense and the NIH - National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and found that considerable decline was observed in military service members with concussive blast TBI when comparing 1- and 5-year clinical outcomes, and that while 80% of service members sought help for in particular mental health problems, only 18% report sustained resolution after treatment. These findings support the need for new treatment strategies to combat the long-term and extremely costly effects of these wartime injuries.
