In babies, the skull is made up of several separate bones that are joined by fibrous seams called sutures. These allow the skull to change shape slightly to help babies fit through the birth canal and allow for brain growth. Craniosynostosis is a condition in infants when these sutures are fused together and change how the skull grows. This change in how the skull grows can hurt brain development.
