Dr. Christine Mac Donald, Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery, is first author on an important paper published in the May 1, 2017 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association - Neurology entitled Early Clinical Predictors of 5-Year Outcome After Concussive Blast Traumatic Brain Injury.
Dr. Mac Donald’s research was supported by the Department of Defense and the NIH - National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and found that considerable decline was observed in military service members with concussive blast TBI when comparing 1- and 5-year clinical outcomes, and that while 80% of service members sought help for in particular mental health problems, only 18% report sustained resolution after treatment. These findings support the need for new treatment strategies to combat the long-term and extremely costly effects of these wartime injuries.
