Dr. Buchwald’s background in public health, epidemiology, and primary care considers health at the level of the individual, the community, and the healthcare system. She has worked with more than 150 partners, including tribes, urban Indian health programs, non-profit organizations, and health departments. Dr. Buchwald has procured 80 grants and contracts totaling more than $150 million from the National Institutes of Health and many other sponsors including a $14 million contract from the Indian Health Service to train providers from all 574 federally recognized tribes and 41 urban Indian programs. She has published more than 500 peer-reviewed articles (Google Scholar Metrics: citations = 26,946; h-index = 85, i10-index = 344). The achievement she is most proud of is mentoring more than 50 junior faculty primarily from groups underrepresented in health research through her leadership in 7 different training programs. These rising stars have published ~500 papers, garnered ~$300 million in grants; over 50% have achieved tenure and are now leaders and mentors in their own right.
