CONCLUSION: Post-traumatic headache is a prevalent sequela of mTBI that persists for at least 12 months in a considerable proportion of affected individuals. The attributable burden necessitates better patient follow-up, disease characterization, improved awareness of PTH in clinical practice, and identification of effective therapies.

OBJECTIVE: It is not currently possible to predict long-term functional dependency in patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our objective was to fit and externally validate a prediction model for 1-year dependency in patients with DoC ≥ 2 weeks after TBI.

Abstract The pupillary light reflex (PLR) is an important biomarker for the detection and management of traumatic brain injury (TBI). We investigated the performance of PupilScreen, a smartphone-based pupillometry app, in classifying healthy control subjects and subjects with severe TBI in comparison to the current gold standard NeurOptics pupillometer (NPi-200 model with proprietary Neurological Pupil Index [NPi] TBI severity score). A total of 230 PLR video recordings taken using both the...

Malaria, caused by Plasmodium parasites, remains one of the most devastating infectious diseases worldwide, despite control efforts that have lowered morbidity and mortality. The only P. falciparum vaccine candidates to show field efficacy are those targeting the asymptomatic pre-erythrocytic (PE) stages of infection. The subunit (SU) RTS,S/AS01 vaccine, the only licensed malaria vaccine to date, is only modestly effective against clinical malaria. Both RTS,S/AS01 and the SU R21 vaccine...

Treatment of youth concussion during the acute phase continues to evolve, and this has led to the emergence of guidelines to direct care. While symptoms after concussion typically resolve in 14-28 days, a portion (~20%) of adolescents endorse persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) beyond normal resolution. This report outlines a study implemented in response to the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke call for the development and initial clinical validation of objective...

CONCLUSIONS: The cost of enhancing CG with the HealthCall application for heavy-drinking PLWH was modestly higher than using the CG alone, whereas MI enhanced with HealthCall delivered by a non-clinician had a lower cost than CG alone. HealthCall may be a low-cost enhancement to brief interventions addressing alcohol use and antiretroviral adherence among PLWH.

CONCLUSION: In our multicenter prospective analysis of 52 patients undergoing TELD, we found that patients receiving CS were significantly older and had significantly lower BMI compared to patients under GA. On subgroup analysis, no statistically significant differences were found in the improvement of PROMs between patients in the CS and GA group.

Cranial vault and skull base fractures in children are distinctly different from those seen in adults. Pediatric skull fractures have the benefit of greater capacity to remodel; however, the developing pediatric brain and craniofacial skeleton present unique challenges to diagnosis, natural history, and management. This article discusses the role of surgical treatment of these fractures, its indications, and techniques.

Intracranial artery calcification is a marker of vascular atherosclerosis and has a high prevalence worldwide. Both atherosclerosis of the internal carotid artery at the carotid sinus in the neck and intracranial calcification have been associated with ischemic stroke. The relationship between the two has not been well studied. The present study investigated how carotid sinus narrowing could relate to calcification located in the distal intracranial artery at the cavernous carotid. We examined a...

Ampullary cancers refer to tumors originating from the ampulla of Vater (the ampulla, the intraduodenal portion of the bile duct, and the intraduodenal portion of the pancreatic duct), while periampullary cancers may arise from locations encompassing the head of the pancreas, distal bile duct, duodenum, or ampulla of Vater. Ampullary cancers are rare gastrointestinal malignancies, and prognosis varies greatly based on factors such as patient age, TNM classification, differentiation grade, and...

CONCLUSIONS: Policymakers must be able to monitor the quantity and location of NDEs in order to combat the opioid crisis. In regions where NDEs are not required to be reported to PDMPs, proprietary pharmaceutical claims datasets may be useful alternatives, with a need for local expertise to assess dataset-specific variability.

Laryngotracheal stenosis, congenital or acquired, is a common cause of pediatric airway obstruction. Acquired subglottic stenosis frequently results from prolonged neonatal intubation. The clinical presentation of subglottic stenosis is variable, ranging from biphasic stridor and frequent upper respiratory infections to acute airway compromise. Optimal patient care requires clinical coordination within a multidisciplinary subspecialty team. Medical management includes optimizing respiratory...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major global public health problem. It is a leading cause of death and disability in children and adolescents worldwide. Although increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is common and associated with death and poor outcome after pediatric TBI, the efficacy of current ICP-based management remains controversial. We intend to provide Class I evidence testing the efficacy of a protocol based on current ICP monitor-based management vs care...

Background Effective use of Danio rerio as a preclinical model requires standardization of macronutrient sources to achieve scientific reproducibility across studies and labs. Our objective was to evaluate single cell protein (SCP) for production of open-source standardized diets with defined heath characteristics for the zebrafish research community. We completed a 16-week feeding trial using juvenile D. rerio 31 days post-fertilization (dpf) (10 tanks per diet, 14 D. rerio per tank) with...

CONCLUSION: Occipital remodeling improves the bullet deformity but does not affect posterior vertical height two years after surgery. We recommend direct inferior occipital remodeling when using the Pi technique for young patients with acute occipital incline angles and occipital constriction.
