Research Opportunities

Resident Research Opportunities

Each resident is encouraged to direct their interests and talents toward the development of an original research project, and each has the opportunity to spend dedicated, protected time pursuing this investigation. The residency training program and elective options can be tailored to allow for additional research time. Upon completion of the training program, residents will be capable of independent investigation.

Many of our residents have successfully competed for research fellowships from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), American Heart Association (AHA), American Cancer Society (ACS) and other funding agencies.

The Department offers extensive research resources. If a resident's research interests are in areas outside neurological surgery, UW Medicine's comprehensive Neurosciences program permits arrangements to be made for investigational experience with other departments. Close associations are maintained with the Departments of Lab Medicine and Pathology, Neurology, Pharmacology, Radiology and Radiation Therapy, Physiology and Biophysics, Bioengineering, Informatics, and Biological Structure.

Publication and Grant Submission

The Department of Neurological Surgery provides residents with guidance and assistance in submitting their research papers for publication and their grant proposals for funding to federal and other agencies. Residents have support from dedicated resident research staff, including the Resident Research Program Advisor and the statistician for analytical support and methods development. In addition, the Department facilitates the identification of awards and funding opportunities for residents. Many of our faculty members sit on editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals, serve as editors for textbooks, and are actively involved with various neurological surgery and neuroscience societies. As a result, residents have many unique opportunities to write book chapters, present at and attend national and international meetings, and participate in the development of new technologies.
